Firefighters rescue man and dog from burning home

Marshallton, DE - At 3:38 AM on Saturday, March 21, 2017 Mill Creek Fire Company along with other area fire companies were dispatched to a residential house fire on the 4400 block of Verona Drive in Klair Estates.  Ladder 21 and Rescue Pumper 21-6 arrived first on scene along wtih Fire Chief Joe Stewart at 3:43 AM to visible smoke and flames from the front of the structure.  Ladder 21 crew attacked the source of the fire in the front living room, while the crew from Rescue Pumper 21-6 performed primary search and rescue.  An elderly man and a dog were both rescued from a second floor bedroom by two Mill Creek firefighters.  The man was treated on-scene by New Castle County EMS for smoke inhalation and transported to Christiana Hospital by ambulance.   The dog was taken to a vetinary hospital for evaluation and treatment.
 

The bulk of the fire was extinguished within ten (10) minutes of arrival and incident was placed under control within sixty (60)minutes.  Over forty (40) firefighters responded to the scene.   There were no firefighter injures.


Christiana, Cranston Heights, Elsmere, Five Points and Minquas Fire Companies also responded to the incident and assisted with fire suppression, incident stabilization and property preservation.  The Delaware State Fire Marhal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
