February 24, 2021 – Mill Creek Fire Company was dispatched at 1:11 PM for an animal rescue at the Carousel Park pond near Pike Creek Valley. A four-month-old puppy ran out on to the semi frozen pond. The ice was too weak to support a person and the dog was stranded about 30 feet from the bank.
Concerned the ice could break dumping the dog into the cold water, a call was made to 9-1-1 for an ice rescue. Along with Mill Creek Fire Company, marine units from Minquas, Delaware City, Goodwill and Holloway Terrance responded along with Cranston Heights, Christiana, Hockessin Fire Companies, and the New Castle County paramedics.
Eight swift water rescue team members from various fire companies entered the water breaking the ice as they approached the dog. All members were wearing special ice rescue gear to protect them from the freezing water. The dog was picked up and carried back to land. The rescue took approximately ten minutes to complete and the dog was unharmed during the event.
