August 14, 2021 – At 10:24 PM Mill Creek Fire Company was notified of a motor vehicle crash on Kirkwood Highway near the community of Woodmill involving and overturned vehicle reported on fire. Two occupants of the vehicle were trapped.
A firefighter from Mill Creek Fire Company was in the area of the crash and radioed the New Castle County Fire Board for an immediate dispatch. An Elsmere Fire Company fire policeman was also in the area and was able to extinguish the vehicle fire.
The vehicle crashed on to the guardrail and landed on its side. Rescue personnel from Mill Creek Fire Company arrived on the scene within minutes and started the extrication process by removing the roof of the vehicle. The remaining occupant of the vehicle was extricated at 10:38 PM within 14 minutes of dispatch.
Firefighters from Cranston Heights and Minquas Fire Companies also responded along with ambulances from Belvedere, Fire Points and Holloway Terrace. The New Castle County Paramedics sent multiple units to the crash scene. Kirkwood Highway was shut down between Milltown Road and Limestone Roads while the Delaware Department of Transportation provided arrow boards and traffic management.
The Delaware State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The roadway was opened around 12:45 AM.
