Woodlea Apartments Fire

Thursday, July 16, 2015

Pike Creek Valley – Mill Creek Fire Company was dispatched to a high-rise structure fire at 5500 Fairmont Drive at the Woodlea Apartments at 22:59 PM on January 2, 2014.  The original call was dispatched as alarm bells and within a couple of minutes escalated to a full structure response.  Mill Creek was then assisted by Hockessin, Newark and Cranston Heights Fire Companies.  Firefighters arriving on the scene had encountered moderate smoke conditions on the first floor and quickly found the source of a fire in an apartment.   The fire was upgraded and additional resources were dispatched from Elsmere, Belvedere Fire Companies and ambulances from Minquas and Five Points.   The fire had activated two sprinkler heads and started to extinguish the fire.   Firefighters quickly started the process to remove the smoke from the building and to control the water flow from the sprinkler system.   The 100+ residents in the building were determined to be safe and a less than a dozen evacuated to the social hall in the building.  The first floor area suffered smoke and water damaged.   Woodlea management arrived on the scene to assist residents with returning to their homes and to start the cleanup process.  Approximately 50 firefighters responded to the alarm after the fire was upgraded to a working fire.   One resident in the building was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.  A few other residents were evaluated by emergency medical personnel.  There were no report of injuries to firefighters and the alarm was brought under control within one hour.   The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
