Terry Kirkpatrick
Terry Kirkpatrick, loving husband, devoted son, much beloved father and grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family he adored on Sunday, March 13, 2016. He was the son of the late, George M. Kirkpatrick.
Terry was born on December 12, 1946, in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1964, where he met his wife of over 50 years, Lynn.
Terry was a man of many talents. He was a computer programmer and real estate agent. He loved being outside and gardening. He and Lynn were such frequent visitors to Longwood Gardens that Terry got a job there and worked as a security guard before retiring.
At 16, Terry joined Brandywine Hundred Fire Company as a junior member. He continued his volunteer career with Mill Creek Fire Company, first at Station 21, where he held the position of Treasurer and then Station 2 where he attained the rank of Engine Captain. Terry retired as a Life Member.
Terry not only enjoyed collecting fire engine/house memorabilia, but when traveling, made a point to visit the local fire companies and has many photos chronicling his adventures. Terry was also an avid Redskins fan. Win or lose, he enjoyed watching every game that was televised and even has a Redskins man cave to honor his team.
During retirement Terry and Lynn spent time traveling on spur of the moment trips to the beach, going on shopping excursions to Lancaster, took a cross country train trip, and several cruises - visiting Alaska, New England, and the Caribbean.
Terry loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He, Lynn, and his mother, Dorothy, frequented Crossroads, Ruby Tuesday's, Friendly's, and Harrington casino. Terry was a guiding and loving father to his girls and would do anything for them from coaching softball to posing for silly photos for school projects. Through the years he was ever present at his grandchildren's school and extra curricular events. He enjoyed family gatherings for holidays, playing games, watching movies, and just being together. Visits from his grandpets were a highlight and treats were endlessly available.
Terry is survived by and will be dearly missed by his best friend and love of his life, Lynn Kirkpatrick; his mother Dorothy Kirkpatrick; his daughters and sons (in-law) Tracey and Michael Walls (Newark); Dawn and Robert Rhoades (Wilmington). He was adored by his grandchildren, Lorin and Daniel Huerta (Bear), James Walls (Wilmington) and Tyler Walls (Wilmington). He will also be remembered with fondness by his grandpets - Sunny, Ziva, Storm, Ruger, Remington, Boodah, and Gracie.
A special thank you to Mill Creek Fire Company for providing transportation to Terry so he could be home with his family, as he wished.
The family would also like to thank Christiana Hospital staff for their exceptional and compassionate care. Gratitude is also sent to Seasons Hospice.
In honor of Terry, and in lieu of flowers, his family suggests contributions to Mill Creek Fire Company, 3808 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, Delaware 19808, in Terry's name.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware, where friends may visit after 11:30 a.m.
